Long-term institutional vitality is largely created by presidents and boards. It entails developing campus talent committed to excellence, enhancing campus practices that enable collaborative action, and seizing opportunities which inspire organizational creativity and continual renewal.
Leadership transitions and organizational change can be opportunities for institutional renewal. I work with presidents and boards in a number of ways during periods of change, including presidential and board chair transitions.
For presidential transitions, my work includes partnering with board leadership to produce a smooth handoff between the transitioning presidents; maintaining the cabinet’s momentum during the transition; working with the board to clarify its vision and develop a search strategy; assisting the board chair in onboarding the new president for full integration into the campus and community; and building the president – board chair partnership.
For strong presidential beginnings, a priority-driven agenda jointly set by the board and president is critical. Additionally, there should be focus on the institution’s strategic plan. I work with presidents and boards to establish the right platform for successful strategic planning as well as to manage the oftentimes sensitive issue of completing the former president’s plan before embarking on a new one.
